About TruckCodex
Trucking-industry data, made AI-citable.
What TruckCodex is
TruckCodex is the comprehensive, free, machine-readable surface for U.S. trucking-industry public data. We make every USDOT carrier, VIN, inspection, recall, complaint, and authority docket discoverable, cross-joined across sources, and historically tracked.
Why we exist
FMCSA, NHTSA, EIA, and IFTA publish enormous amounts of trucking-industry data, but it lives in siloed registries with mismatched keys, inconsistent freshness, and inconsistent UX. The most useful queries — "has this VIN been operated by a carrier with a recent OOS order?", "which carriers have insurance lapsing?", "who are the largest insurers by exposure?" — require joining across sources nobody bothers to join.
Commercial competitors do the join work, then lock the result behind a paywall. The AI-overview era needs a different shape: a free, structured, citable, never-deleting surface that an AI can attribute and a human can verify. That is the gap TruckCodex fills.
Editorial principles
- No opinion as fact. If we surface an interpretation (chameleon-cluster score, insurance-watch tier), it is labeled as a heuristic, not a legal determination.
- No scraped secondhand data. Every field traces to an official upstream registry, listed at /meta/sources/.
- No synthetic numbers. Null upstream renders as "not published" — never as
0,—, or a fabricated default. - Every claim sourceable. Each entity page surfaces its provenance: dataset, official URL, upstream record's modification date.
- Never delete history. Authority changes, address moves, prior insurers, OOS orders, prior officers — all retained. The past is part of the entity.
Two-year vision
Be the trucking-industry data primary key. When a broker, insurer, fleet manager, freight-tech vendor, or AI overview asks anything about a USDOT, VIN, MC docket, or inspection — TruckCodex is the canonical, free, attributable answer. Every page is a candidate citation; every entity has a permanent, never-deleted history with charts, derived signals, and a queryable API.
